Find Discontinued Hardwood Flooring - How?
This section deals specifically with prefinished hardwood flooring that may have been
discontinued by a manufacturer. For unfinished hardwood replacements, talking with one that is familiar with recognizing hardwood floor types, color, and grade is suggested.
How Do I Know It’s A Prefinished Floor?
Nearly all prefinished floors are beveled (shown right) to some extent. Some exceptions include very high end products made by the likes of Margaratelli of Italy. Others can include what are termed longstrip floors. There are others, but an uneducated number of prefinished beveled hardwoods runs over 95%
Where To Start The Search?
Perhaps you’ve already seen the message boards with people like yourself looking for discontinued floors. The problem is thousands of square feet of your discontinued brand may be scattered all over the USA. One box here, five there, and on. These folks don’t even think about what they have laying around, nor do they think anyone is looking for it. And do they really care?
Search Manufacturer Websites For Dealers Located Near You
The larger companies in the likes of Bruce, Kahrs and Mirage for example all have a dealer locator section on their websites. Simply type in your zip code, provide a radius from where you want to search and a list follows. That’s the easy part.
Local Dealers?
Instead of driving about to all the locations listed make some phone calls first. Considering some of these stores may have closed down due to the hard economy you may be wasting your time.
Upon reaching someone on the phone you may have to handle this carefully because many dealers don’t have a clue what discontinued stuff they may have piled in their warehouses. Others may not want to deal with the hassle. Some may have an inventory list, but not many in our opinion.
Cut Down On The Calls
If your home is in a tract neighborhood there are certain companies that handle new construction projects. It’s these folks that are likely to have more leftovers than smaller stores, unless the installers had a habit of keeping all the leftovers.
Some dealers will probably scoff at my suggestion, but what the hey. Tell them you’re interested in installing hardwood in a large room but you have another area that needs repairing. Hopefully, you know the product numbers, name, and manufacturer. You’d like to come down and look at new samples but wonder if they may have your discontinued brand.
As mentioned they probably have no clue if they have it somewhere. Hopefully they are willing to allow you to go into their warehouse with their supervision searching for your needs. Wear some old clothes. You may be spending an hour or more digging through unorganized piles or stacks of flooring covered with dust.
