Engineered - Rotary Cut, Peeled, Solid Sawn

Engineered hardwood flooring is cut from the log of a tree in three different ways. Many products are generally a rotary cut or peeled veneer; cut from the log in a manner similar to that of peeling an orange(shown below right). The appearance becomes more obvious in that it offers a long lineal look.

Sliced or Solid Sawn Cut

Sliced cut veneer or solid sawn cut products are cut similar to genuine 3/4" solid hardwoods; offering the real appearance of solid 3/4" hardwood floors opposed to the rotary procedure.

Comparing veneer or solid sawn cuts to rotary, one should also consider the thickness involved. Some manufacturers claim thicknesses of 1/8" and greater can be refinished three or more times.¹ Whereas some thinner veneers under 1mm cannot be refinished at all.

If you're seeking an engineered product that can be refinished, it's always important to check the thickness of the wear layer. Not all are created equal. More times than often, price dictates the thickness of the veneer or top surface layer.

How Often Are They Refinished?

This will depend on your expectations. Any well cared for hardwood floor should not need refinishing for at least 10-20 years. Hardwoods with a veneer of at least 1/16'' or 2mm can be refinished at least once.¹ If you're seeking price and one refinishing, we suggest a veneer that fits into this category.

These floor types will not need refinishing. Damage that inevitably occurs can be touched up with matching stain.

¹ Will depend on original subfloor flatness, condition of floor, refinisher knowledge and skills.
